> Managerialism is bad at universities but it is worse elsewhere.

Maybe. But the key difference is between work places where the job structure has been designed to work within a managerial system, and universities where the job structure was designed within a much more democratic, collaborative work place, then shoehorned into an increasingly managerial one. The result is more tolerable for some than for others, but far from ideal for anyone.

Eg it's a lot better for those with tenure than for adjuncts, who have no job security or guaranteed minimum paid hours per week. In the US, some adjunct lecturers teach classes at 2-3 different campuses, with no pay for travel time and little or no allowance for travel expenses. The idea of paid time to pursue research or publishing, or give service to their discipline (eg journal editing, peer reviewing) is a distant dream.

This is assuming academic positions are even available. I know people with humanities PhDs who left academia simply because they lost the musical chairs game that gets fought over the remaining positions.
