Strypey<p>When news media are reporting budget figures for public infrastructure projects, they tend to just quote them verbatim. But it might lead to a more informed public debate on infrastructure, if they reported the costs as per-year estimates. In other words, take the budgeted cost of building or buying something, divide by the number of years it&#39;s projected to last, and report it as &#39;$N per year, over P years&#39;.</p><p>(1/?)</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.nzoss.nz/tags/NZPolitics" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>NZPolitics</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nzoss.nz/tags/PublicSpending" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>PublicSpending</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nzoss.nz/tags/infrastructure" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>infrastructure</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nzoss.nz/tags/NewsMedia" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>NewsMedia</span></a></p>
Strypey<p>Maybe we need a long term decision-making process for <a href="https://mastodon.nzoss.nz/tags/infrastructure" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>infrastructure</span></a> spending that isn&#39;t hostage to the shifting political winds?</p><p>What if any capital spending projected to span multiple governments needed a supermajority in Parliament? Or to pass a referendum at an election? Either way, politicians would be forced to take a nonpartisan, long term approach to planning, building and maintaining infrastructure.</p><p><a href="https://www.rnz.co.nz/podcast/focusonpolitics?share=84797662-137a-49de-a8c6-42e15eb957b6" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">rnz.co.nz/podcast/focusonpolit</span><span class="invisible">ics?share=84797662-137a-49de-a8c6-42e15eb957b6</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.nzoss.nz/tags/podcasts" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>podcasts</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nzoss.nz/tags/RNZ" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>RNZ</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nzoss.nz/tags/FocusOnPolitics" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>FocusOnPolitics</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nzoss.nz/tags/NZPolitics" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>NZPolitics</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nzoss.nz/tags/PublicSpending" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>PublicSpending</span></a></p>
