I guess I'm going on a rant again. Strap in.

People who make fun of #Linux users who don't appreciate #Microsoft's recent embracing of Linux on cloud and desktop are missing the point in a very disheartening way. We don't want Linux, we want a #FreeDesktop.

I don't give a single damn if it's Linux or BSD or NT at the base of it. If I can't _opt out of ads in an OS I paid for_, something has gone extremely wrong. Microsoft may be embracing the Linux kernel but they are not moving anywhere near a free desktop.

Microsoft, like all large corporations, is not monolithic, and some parts are doing cool stuff.

But when the technical advisor to the CEO mocks whiny Linux users on Twitter, it pisses me the fuck off.

I have a desktop where I can pretty close to fully understand everything happening if I need to.

I have a desktop where the only limitations on functionality are _technical_ limitations. I can _never_ have that with Windows.

I have a desktop whose behaviour I don't have to second guess. I have a desktop whose behaviour I don't have to monitor closely or worry about to prevent shit like this:

nora.codes/post/a-story-about-

My choice is between a fairly functional desktop that I trust to basically not have ulterior motives, or a fairly functional desktop that in some instances is actively hostile to me.

I get decent support for both; ServerFault and AskUbuntu are about as good as consumer Windows tech support in my experience. As good as small business support in most cases, really.

So yeah fuck you if you think the "we freeze hell every day" shit is funny or cute.

They decided to deign to release one piece of software on Linux. Whoop de fucking do. If it weren't for 20 years of hostile nonsense from them, free desktops wouldn't need to beg for scraps from the MS table.
