I've spent a bit of time investigating what's involved in flashing the x60 with #Libreboot and sought some support from the #Trisquel community, who are very enthusiastic about it:
Today, I installed #PureOS for the first time. They only release a 64-bit version that follows the #GNU #FSDG (Free System Distribution Guidelines) so I've been waiting to own a 64-bit PC that doesn't need any proprietary blobs. Overall, the install experience was good, although IMHO the "password" advice is well out-of-date. There are a number of features I like, that the default Trisquel desktop doesn't have, like the #NightLight feature. I've been looking for something like that for a while.
@selea actually if I'm reading this blog post right, it suggests that #KDE is shipping as a secondary default DE in #PureOS and has for some time.
From what I heard, a number of folks were pissed off at the PureOS folks because before the fundraiser they said to both the gnome and KDE folks that they'd be equal citizens, but then afterwards it's basically been gnome, gnome, gnome.
I will put the caveat on this that this is just what I heard from others. I have no direct experience or opinion myself, beyond noticing that all their screenshots seem to be Gnome.
@Blort what it says in the blog piece from Jan 2018 is:
> a PureOS GNOME-first strategy, with other Desktop Environments (DEs), such as KDE, available and supported by Purism.
... and that their focus is bringing #GNOME up to par with #Plasma across both desktop and mobile. I don't know which fundraiser you're referring to (I believe there have been a number), when it was, or if they made public statements promising #KDE more than this before it.
Ah nice, I hope that there will be more DE's in the future too :)
I do prefer KDE over GNOME - for some reason I did hate gnome back in 2001, but now I use MATE - which is "old-gnomish"
@selea #Mate is the default DE in #Trisquel. Based on my experience so far, I would recommend that over #PureOS for now. #Purism have still got a some work to do before both the OS and the #Librem apps and services are ready for primetime. Fair enough though, given the ambitious task they've set themselves, one that better funded companies like #Canonical and #Mozilla have tried and failed.
Yeah, I am running Trisquel myself and have grown to love MATE alot.
I do prefer OpenBox or WindowsMaker even more :)
@selea cool. I post on the #Trisquel forums on and off using the same handle. Installing #OpenBox is one of the first things I do whenever I reinstall Trisquel. It's great when I want to do one thing at a time and put as much of my PCs resources into that thing as possible. Games, audio/video editing, stuff liked that.
@selea @purism #Librem devices are well and truly out of my price range (see the OP). But I know a libre game developer who bought one of their laptops as his everyday workstation and loves it. I've bought a month of librem.one credit though, and if their #LibremTunnel VPN works from China, we'll be cancelling our #ExpressVPN account and supporting #Purism that way instead.
