They have also announced they are dropping support for 32-bit PCs from 19.04 onwards:

So 18.04 LTS is the last version of Lubuntu that can be recommended for use with older PCs. 9 will be based off 18.04 LTS, and I presume will remain the default desktop. Trisquel 8 is what I run (for now) on an ancient 32-bit Acer netbook

@strypey Is it just Canonical that discontinued LXDE? According to the LXDE website and forum they're still alive.

@LeftCoast I could be wrong, but everything I've seen on the subject says that has merged with to create . There will be ongoing LTS maintenance work for Lubuntu 18.04, but AFAIK there will be no new versions or features. Got any links that say otherwise?

@LeftCoast these people are all speculating. Here it is from the horses mouth:
"In the longer term, most Razor-qt components will fully be integrated into the LXDE-Qt and both teams will focus on the same project. Looking further ahead, the GTK version of LXDE will be dropped and all efforts will be focused on the Qt port. "

@strypey That was published July 22, 2013. Nothing lasts forever, but I'm happy that LXDE has not been discontinued yet.
