New #Disintermedia blog post; 'Can Your Organization Help Save the Free Music Archive?':
#FreeMusicArchive #FMA #CCMusic
Some #GoodNews from the #FreeMusicArchive. Details are sketchy, but what they can tell us for now is that the site will *not* go down on Dec 1. Uploads are still suspended for now, and their collection is still being mirrored by #Archive.org, which is good anyway. #WatchThisSpace
Well, based on my preliminary research, to mirror the FMA we need:
1. An estimation of the size of the FMA (number of tracks, and total size of files)
2. A funkwhale instance were we can import the music
3. A script to crawl/download the whole archive
4. Permission from the FMA to run the script (since it may increase their bandwidth cost)
5. Funding to cover the hosting costs, if relevant
@funkwhale Archive.org might also be approachable about providing hosting for an instance of #FunkWhale serving the #FMA collection - and potentially other libre music collections they hold - to the #fediverse. Again, the folks working on archiving the FMA seem like the best people to talk to.
Just to let you know, following our discussion from last week, I'v started writing a small utility to grab the FMA content from archive.org.
I plan to mirror at least a part of the FMA on open.audio using this :)
So, I've imported ~25Gb of music from the Free Music Archive on https://open.audio using this method.
It worked beautifully, and it's now available for the whole #Funkwhale federation. Follow this library from your Funkwhale instance and you'll have access to it:
You can also visit https://open.audio/library/ directly to listen to all this new content! (you don't need an account ;)
@funkwhale that's awesome, especially considering they are now owned by a for profit venture backed company and will inevitably get fucked over as a result. Glad you're helping prevent all that awesome music from disappearing...
@ailurocrat oh, I missed the part where they were acquired (owned?) by Kitplit…
This import went well too, and I launched another mirrorring tasks for 4000 additionnal albums before going to sleep yesterday.
All of this is currently importing into https://open.audio, but I'm confident saying that in a ~60 minutes, almost 350Gb of additionnal CC music (6000 albums, 40K tracks) from the FMA will be available!
In total, I'd say we have roughly 40% of the FMA mirrored on open.audio, which takes less space than I initially expected.
Very good new!
Do you expect 100% one day? 😛
@roipoussiere I might have enough storage on the host, so yeah !
> Due to traffic, the site's been up and down today (11/08). Please DO NOT try to scrape the site, friends!
It was you? 😁
@roipoussiere ahah no, I scraped from Archive.org :D
Import on https://open.audio over \o/
@marsxyz yeah, that's pretty much my current state of mind right now
@funkwhale this is so cool, thanks!
@thoughtcrime you're welcome :)
@funkwhale you're a hero!!!
@funkwhale Have you had any interest from the Archive.org folks in running their own instance(s) of #FunkWhale, and hooking it up to the various audio collections they store? That would be an amazing boost to the range of works available to the FW federation. Does FunkWhale include the ability for instances to mirror collections, or use #WebTorrent like #PeerTube does, to reduce the load on popular instances?
@strypey sorry, I forgot to answer you earlier.
I did not contact Archive.org because, to be frank I don't feel comfortable suggesting using Funkwhale on such a large scale as long as we don't have a stable release of the project.
I agree it would be awesome to have all the archive.org content fueled directly on Funkwhale's federation though!
There is no mirroring mecanism built-into the project yet :)
@funkwhale fair enough. Got to crawl before you can walk, eh? :)
@funkwhale is open.audio down? Maybe there was an error with the import after all hehe
@thoughtcrime yep it's a dns issue
@funkwhale ok thanks!
@funkwhale oh hell yeah this is awesome!!!
@drequivalent Funkwhale's library are technically followable, since libraries will notify followers when new content is uploaded. But this is not something Mastodon or Pleroma actually support.
However, we do plan to integrate features that will work with existing fediverse software such as commenting on artists / albums / tracks or embedding, yes :)
@funkwhale Come on then :)
A lot of it can be done on your side, I think, such as the way Peertube videos work.
@funkwhale And, thanks for your work.
@drequivalent yeah, it's on our roadmap. But we have a limited amount of time and resources, and a lot to work on.
Current focus is on moderation tools, to ensure admins and users can protect themselves.
@drequivalent you can check out https://dev.funkwhale.audio/funkwhale/funkwhale/milestones from time to time to know what's planned in each release, and also subscribe to our release feeds via RSS (https://dev.funkwhale.audio/funkwhale/funkwhale/tags) to be notified of new releases and their content ;)
@drequivalent I'm sure patches / pull requests are welcome ;) In fact, after the recent discussions about helping #Dreamwidth support #ActivityPub, I wonder if there's a place for a crack team of federation ninjas to kick into action whenever a project wants to improve their federation feature set?
@funkwhale Funkwhale has such a nice UI. Great work! 😍
@funkwhale Haven't tested funkwhale before this one, and it works beautifully, congrats ❤️
One question, is this the whole FMA archive or just what was available on archive.org? (I noticed this album is not there, for instance http://freemusicarchive.org/music/BNego__Seletores_de_Freqncia/Enxugando_Gelo )
This include ~40% of what is mirrored on Archive.org (more will be added soon), so that could explain while you're not finding everything, especially if Archive.org doesn't include the whole dataset.
@renatolond and my english is really, really bad today, apologies :(
while -> why
@funkwhale ah, don't worry, happens to me often
@funkwhale makes sense, in any case, great job! :D
@funkwhale Is it possible to download content from Funkwhale locally?
@phoe sure, there is no technical limitation preventing it. We offer download links on each individual track, and if you're using mobile apps like DSub, you also have options to cache content for offline use :)
