This is why we can't have nice things. I loved that character. Small-minded assholes are taking this away from us (and harassing a woman doing a great job).
RT @SWTweets@twitter.com Kelly Marie Tran has deleted all the posts off her Instagram due to months of harassment she has received for her character Rose in #TheLastJedi
@uliwitness you've raised two issues here. 1) social media harassment of actress for her role in a movie. Totally unacceptable. Not making excuses for that in any way when I raise issue 2.
@uliwitness 2) Like Holdo, Rose is a badly written ill-fitting, and arguably surplus character, in any already busy story. I welcome #StarWars having more female (and non-white) characters, but I'd to see them being active protagonists, with story arcs that cover whole trilogies, rather than being awkwardly shoe-horned in mid-flow
@uliwitness why couldn't Rose's sister survive the bombing run (why have bombers at all if they're always suicide missions?), and be the one who catches Finn? Then it would make sense that she's a kick-arse pilot. Why couldn't Maz Kanata have an active role, rather than just dialling in some exposition like a cut scene from a video game? There are so many examples of the female characters being badly served by all the new #StarWars scripts
@uliwitness Here's another one; why couldn't Leia have done everything Holdo did, instead of spending most of the movie in Sleeping Beauty mode? Speaking of Holdo, if she knew she could destroy the First Order fleet by flying one of the bigger ships into it, why didn't she suggest moving everyone to the 2 fastest big ships and fly the other one into the fleet as soon as she realized they'd been following through hyperspace?
@uliwitness The Lucas-directed prequels, however, were such a disappointment I don't even consider them canon, any more than George's digital vandalism on the re-released originals. #TheLastJedi, with all its flaws, was still a better #StarWars film than all three prequels, and its greatest weaknesses were all forms of #prequelitis (over-use of CGI; over-use of bathos and slapstick, #CutesyAnimals, ; fragmenting the narrative with weak, gimmicky side characters etc).
@uliwitness Someone made the effort to break down the screentime women get in each #StarWars movie. Women get a buttload of screen time in every porno ever made (except gay male porn and sometimes even then!). Way more than they get in any Star Wars movie. So that makes porno better than Star Wars for female representation in film, right? Riiiiiight?
@uliwitness then, this financial illiterate on #IndieWire used "unadjusted box office numbers" to make the argument that because Ep 8 made more money on release in 2010s $ than Ep 6 made in 1980s $, that proves that people will pay more for #StarWars movies the more screentime the female characters get. So that means porn should make bigger box office than any Star Wars film, right? Riiiiiiight? *facepalm*
@uliwitness I can't sum the fundamental problem with the #StarWars prequels better than this:
"The other problem with Episode Order is that the prequels don't really have a story. They're just background for the real story, which is Luke and his new friends trying to defeat the Empire." Word.
#TheHobbit movies also suffered from their fair share of #prequelitis, and I really enjoyed the fan edit that cut all 3 down into one pretty watchable 4 hour epic. Looking forward to seeing what other fan edits have done along the same lines with the #StarWars prequels
