Now that the heartbreak at the state of my homeland is getting old, it's starting to be dominated by humiliation at being in any way associated with the country, partcularly when I see this: boingboing.net/2018/11/27/miss Many people (most Americans) think the US is exceptional. It is, but probably not in any of the ways you'd want it to be if you aren't an asshole.

I've just published a Jupyter Notebook I used to present an introduction to the excellent Python attrs package at the November 2018 Christchurch Python meetup. github.com/chch-python-meetup/

This is just one of dozens of reasons I have to get to LCA2019 (which, as luck would have it, is happening just down the road from me, here in Christchurch, NZ in Jan 2019)... linux.conf.au/schedule/present

Anyone interested in a contract gig to develop something like iTerm for Windows? (or know someone who might be) The project would be open source from day one. Remote workers welcome. DM me.

Ah, Spring in #Melbourne! That beautiful time of year when leaving the house for more than a couple of hours requires you to carry sufficient clothing variations to cope with every possible weather condition that occurs on Earth.

influx-spout 2.1 is out! The headline new feature is the ability to generate downsampled streams of measurements for real-time archives. If you're a big user, check it out. menno.io/posts/influx-spout-v2

if you're new and worried about your follower numbers, don't! mastodon is more about the community and having fun with your friends. you can drop the toxic thought process where you viewed yourself as a brand on Twitter.

Use your local and federated timelines! Talk to people if something catches your eye! Don't gamify the experience here, be considerate. Think about being part of the local & federated community instead of figuring out how to go viral. Mastodon is super fun without those habits.

The birth of #Linux :tux:

On August 25 1991 Linus Torvalds wrote to comp.os.minix:

"I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and
professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones."

"won't be big" he said. 😃

Happy birthday, Linux, and congratulations to Mr. Torvalds.
