To folks in NZ - if you want a *superb* Linux laptop, I can recommend getting one of these! (current sale price is $550!):

Hmm, that last panorama was pretty rubbish, so here're a couple other shots showing the snow covered alps..

#OpenSource #OSsummit session Q&A today

Q from virtual attendee: "I would like to participate in $PROJECT but have concerns about your #privacy policy. What to do?"

A from speaker: "Please join our Slack to discuss..."

So let me get this straight:

Github scanned a bunch of open source projects.

They trained an AI with it.

They basically ignored the licenses and tried to shove a "because we are basically copying GPL code, it doesn't mean the result is GPL".

And now they are charging for it?

Ok, serious question now:

MS Github scanned whole repositories to train Copilot. Trying to move your code to another service (say, Gitlab) won't delete what it already learnt from your open source project.

But will MS Github still scan new repositories? Or will it find it "done" and now just learn from active, paying users?

maybe we shouldn't have put all our decentralised Web behind a couple of giant centralised CDN services

<< A Cloudflare outage, which began about 15 minutes ago, has hit several popular services including Discord, Omegle, DoorDash, Crunchyroll, Feedly, Zerodha,, news outlet Register, Upstox and Social Blade. The internet infrastructure firm said it is investigating the “wide-spread” issue, but it’s unclear what all regions are impacted. >>

Dear Justice Department, Microsoft should not be allowed to do this

Dave Lane boosted captures in real-time new posts from self-hosted WordPress blogs, plus anything they link to, and does something similar for new citations on Wikipedia articles.

I wrote down how this works, and how it all ties together.
(The rabbit hole got me on this one, I'll say! 😅)

In my mind, Apple is to Microsoft as the US Democrats are the GOP. The former is cooler and appeals to some (superficial) liberals, the latter appeals to a large-but-shrinking demographic of people who are oblivious to reality and have no moral/technical compass. Both are rapacious and totally self-serving, but the former just hides it a lot better. And if you know me, you can probably guess where Bernie Sanders sits in this metaphor 😂

And here we are, at the shortest day of the year.

I think having the "Be the change you want to see" mindset has been very beneficial for me.

Tired of Windows and MS? Changed to Linux and I'm happy.

Not comfortable with Google? Moved pretty much all my stuff outside of Google's hands, except one old email I barely use.

Tired of Youtube's ads and stuff? I use now Freetube.

Twitter gives me headache? Deleted my Twitter, use Fedi now.

Need cloud stuff? Self host.

Can't find addon downloader on Linux for Elder Scrolls Online? Made my own! :)

BIG WHEELS 🚲 This man in China was spotted hauling a car on the back of his three-wheeler. According to a witness, the man appeared to be a waste collector transporting a scrapped car.

Despite being one of the wealthiest corporations that ever existed, Facebook is still incapable of creating a threaded discussion view that works. A notification of a response to a comment a) doesn't contain the response (it should, but FB want you to look at their site & advertising - asshole move), and b) it doesn't take you to the reply, or even unfold comments around it so you can see it. From what I can see, their system is completely borked.

Very pleased to see (I got an email about it as I'd made a submission) that our regional council, ECan, has decline the resource consent by Bathurst Coal to operate the Canterbury Coal Mine. Thank goodness. Seems that sanity has prevailed just this once.

Wow, it's not a very nice day today. A good day for soup, though.
