Just listened to this: rnz.co.nz/programmes/two-cents - I reckon Arthur Grimes was remarkably disrespectful and dogmatic (and actually ignorant of many issues regarding NZ sustainability - 'GM ryegrass' my ass. Doesn't do a thing to mitigate darirying's unsustainable nitrogen pollution). I think Kate Raworth wiped the floor with him.

Today I learned about EnQ.

The IRS has a longstanding problem with call hold times; because of the volume of people calling, and a paucity of agents, it can take hours to get a real person on the phone.

The founders of EnQ decided to "solve" this problem: they bought a vast phone bank and now constantly auto-dial the IRS, locking up all their phone lines indefinitely. Then, you pay EnQ, and they attach you to the line that's been on hold the longest (and is therefore closest to talking to a real person).

I don't know how to relate as a human being to someone who can be this blatantly villainous.

If you're hosting your own stuff, and using Let's Encrypt, they've updated their Certificate Authority (CA) which *might break* many services (especially on Docker containers that haven't recently been updated). It's bitten me once already. For more info, see letsencrypt.org/2021/10/01/cer

As a country, NZ needs to become actively anti-corporate rather than continually believe corporate assurances that regularly turn out to be self-serving lies by greedy, unprincipled people representing them. newshub.co.nz/home/politics/20

Chalk is composed of the skeletons of countless microbes, long-dead, even their seas are now dead.
When chalk squeals on a blackboard it is the impotent scream of countless dying wraiths as their reliquaries are annihilated

Windows sucks.
Microsoft Teams sucks.
Both made by Microsoft.

Coincidence? I don't think so

@o0karen0o @lightweight

I'm planning a conference (linguistics) for the Spring. Our University/Department has Zoom accounts, which we're expected to use for classes and official University business.

But we don't have a high enough "tier" of Zoom for me to use it for a conference whether I wanted to or not. I'm not keen on spending conference resources to pay Zoom. I'd rather pay a host to spin up a BBB instance for the conference and have been looking into different options.

Just got Maureen Webb's 'Coding Democracy' from our library (I appear to be the first reader of this copy!). So far, a cracking read!

@lightweight yes, I usually try to just supply an easy alternative too. "You don't need an account or to download any software - really!" This is why I'm just completely flabbergasted that people who actually know better keep brazenly using Zoom and expecting me to use it too. It's not like being invited to a relative's birthday party. This is a professional discussion about the ethics of freely licensed code.

Ugh. I'm so frustrated to be continually asked to participate in talks & panels on Zoom specifically about tech ethics & #opensource. There are great #FOSS systems for this. See @fosdem's successful use of solely FOSS solutions for over 30,000 participants. #jitsi #BigBlueButton

I am all for meeting people where they are, but at this point, if you're an expert in these issues enough to be running a conference on these topics and still using Zoom you just aren't trying, and you are comfortable broadcasting that you don't really care.

We undermine our own advocacy by not leading by example when we can. @mako's seminal essay mako.cc/writing/hill-free_tool makes the great point at we cannot allow ourselves to be at the whim of the companies whose tooling we do not control.
By ceding control to proprietary platforms, we set ourselves up for failure when they inevitably fall down or ask for more.

@lightweight @brainblasted Yep, you can upgrade the firmware using the stock ROM without having to fully flash the stock ROM. (It's what I did too.)

Interesting - so TechSoup for non-profits is helping Microsoft pressure non-profits to squander their resources and lock themselves into proprietary software in the cloud, too. Not at all impressed with these folks. techsoup.net.nz/blog/important
