Reminder:the real existential threat to Free Software isn't the make-up of the FSF governance board. It's US multinational corporations funding legal reports encouraging companies to shun Copyleft licensed software, calling it "too risky" for business use. (of course, if you want to see a real legal minefield, take a gander at any proprietary EULA... if you can find one - they tend to be completely hidden). Also: the shade thrown by Github and MSFT on Copyleft at every opportunity..

Accessibility report: I setup a Nextcloud form asking for accessibility requests for a presentation. There was one form response suggesting captions, which we had via jitsi

We had one blind person who could not use the form. I need to file a bug with NC f about that and colors

For the blind person, we tested jitsi and BBB ahead of time. There were difficulties with the available browsers, but we made it work

The jitsi recording did not have the captioning, so I need to work on that as well

Wow, just heard there's another mass shooting in the US. That, my friends, is a beyond-broken culture.

For those forced to use AWS for services, and have to sign in to a "root account" for your organisation - which now *requires* 2FA... it's very very tricky, because only one person (generally speaking) will have the 2nd factor... which creates a massive liability for organisations (e.g. mine) where the person with the second factor is unavailable when you urgently need to access the root account. One would have thought AWS would have a smarter system. One would be mistaken.

Hey guys, Thunderbird is STILL hiring developers. You can help modernize an application used by ~20,000,000 people and growing!

The open source community can make something better than Outlook, but only if folks come and build it.

2/2 A guy in another vehicle yelled at me "why're you being such an aggressive dickhead, he's stuck in traffic". Sadly I didn't have time to say: "because you're apologising for his illegal act rather than holding him to a higher standard. He's oblivious to the road around him and you're tolerating his callous lack of discipline and consideration for other road users, for which he should lose his phone and/or his license. Driving is a privilege not a right." Asshat.

Riding up a hill on my bike after dropping my boy off at school (getting exercise where I can, ) and had to raise my voice at folks going down the hill on the other side looking at their phones instead of the (narrow, winding) road (which is also a major cycling route). Makes me livid... 1/2

:boost_ok: :ablobcatwave: Please boost this post if you would like the EFF to join the fediverse. :ablobcatbongo:

In a survey the EFF sent me, I suggested they create an account on the fediverse, so they can reach more supporters and support innovative free software that promotes interoperability among platforms, something they've advocated for in the past, too.

If you can boost this post, maybe I'll be able to show them that there are quite a few users who would like them here!

The EFF is the infamous nonprofit organisation that fights for privacy, government transparency, and digital freedom. Their fight is very important, and the EFF is very special to me.

You can see some of their work here

In the meantime, you can follow @eff, which is an unofficial mirror of their Twitter.

If it is public money, it should be public code as well! I support @fsfe's call for more #publiccode:

The last contribution to #Signal's server software was on April 22, 2020. Due to the sudden commit drop to literally 0 it is no longer possible to seriously call current Signal versions fully open-source.

That has no effect on the messenger's end-to-end encryption or its overall security but it does compromise the trust in the Signal Foundation, especially when considering that they did not give any reason for not disclosing the source code.

Ugh. Morning spent mopping up after a massive wad of malicious emails (not sure, but looks like virus/ransomware links attacking Windows computers) sent out (possibly by compromised MS Exchange servers) forging our org email as the FROM... so they're bouncing back to us, doing a bit of reputational damage... Getting hundreds of bounce emails every few minutes. Email is, sadly, not designed for this.

@lightweight every college kid who picked a CS major for the high expected salary needs to hear this. Everyone knows there's a market bubble with software startups, no one wants to admit that their jobs are overvalued

Others, sadly, have so much tied up going the wrong way (with crushing mortgages) they can't afford to have an epiphany.... Instead, they rewrite their role in the narrative, and carry an extra load of cognitive dissonance.

When you've been working for some big tech firm in a high-paying job for a decade, (or the company you work for gets bought by big tech) it must totally suck when you realise that your honest efforts are not only not making the 'net, computing, or the world better... they're actually *what's causing the problems* that *many other* are fighting again. I know more than a couple of those people.

So, in case anyone in the Fediverse cases, NZ just fended off the Italian challenger to retain the America's Cup.
