I must admit that every day, I'm taken aback by how untroubled so many (almost all) people are with having their entire digital lives controlled & surveilled by 5 US-based totalitarian (non-democratic) multinational corporations that throw around more financial weight than most nations and laugh at any gov't regulation attempts.

Ooo - handy! Using simple tools to stream high quality video from your DSLR or other camera via OBS on Ubuntu 20.04... invidio.us/watch?v=EqrZrKC1WA0 - thanks for the pointer @mackiwg !

Spotify is buying up all the popular podcasts and removing them from the commons in order to drive you to their platform.

Podcasts have somehow stayed open access, built on standards, and just (mostly) work. Moving them to a proprietary platform just so a few people (ie: not you) can make money is bad for everyone who isn't making money. (ie: you.)

Data stored locally on your phone ... and an AWS account in Sydney under Australian data access laws. No thank you.

Wow, the IRS' online services couldn't be more useless... and their in person services (i.e. call centre) is closed until further notice... doubly useless.

After the sadness of seeing another pile of KFC wrappers dumped out of a car by simpletons on this morning's school run, an obvious "reduction" measure NZ could take is to *ban branded fast food packaging*. Infractions should be simple to follow up :) - it's a no-brainer. Do it, NZ gov't.

@lightweight Makes me naseaus!

I heard that ISDS started with countries with weak court systems, but how it ever made it's way as a standard feature of these trade agreements negotiators don't think twice about I cannot understand!

One can only hope that, in the US gov't, natural selection takes its most decisive course.

& cheerleading for ... you remind me of the good Trojan folks who were so amazed & touched by the Greeks' unexpected generosity, that they rushed out to help push their beautiful wheeled gift horse into the city walls.

They're all corruptible... but some come with an implicit power imbalance that all but guarantees it.

Ethical continuum analogy

Software:
Copyleft > Weak open source > Proprietary

Political System:
Democratic > Free market authoritarian > Totalitarian

Yes - I wonder how many of these will affect NZ now that it's ratified . corporateeurope.org/en/2020/05 I cannot see this ending well for anyone involved (except the litigating corporations' shareholders).

Never, in human history, has there ever been a time when stupid could be so effectively - globally - amplified. What have we wrought?

@lightweight @resynth1943 Yes exactly. To believe that a massive capitalist power centre can change, in the way many seem to think they have, is to not understand the mechanics of our present day society and economic system.

@lightweight @resynth1943 It's very frustrating seeing the number of Linux advocates genuinely fooled into believing Microsoft is now somehow now less of a predatory capitalist behemoth. The only thing that has changed is the efficacy of its hunting techniques.

Microsoft is fundamentally like an obligate carnivore. If it doesn't hunt, it will die. Free software is like a herd of herbivores. If it doesn't cooperate and watch out carnivores, it dies.

@lightweight @resynth1943 Seems to me what they love, and now realise they were missing out on, is massive amounts of zero cost labour.

I've already explained what MSFT would have to do to actually be trustworthy (rather than merely pay PR teams to spin them that way): davelane.nz/mstrust

But the US public corporate model ensures they will never change. They're stuck in a race to the ethical bottom. Rehabilitation is structurally impossible. It's not even worth trying. Here's why: davelane.nz/megacorps

Also MSFT: "Oh, and we pay all our "Open Source Champions" with the spoils of 100% proprietary software lock-in & anti-competitive patent royalty protection rackets! Come and work for us, people! Selling out was never so profitable!"
