Just found this opensource.com article about Greenpeace becoming an 'open source' organisation. Quite ironic, since a few months ago I met one of their principal IT managers, who openly mocked our efforts to use #foss and #opensource IT in-house. Greenpeace relies 100% on Google's Gsuite. Any comparison with fair trade coffee was met with a "yeah but this is easier, we just don't care about Google's dubious side."

As @schneierblog@twitter.com explained two years ago, the market forces don’t push the ecosystem to create devices that last a long time, have good support, and are good for the environment:

If anyone has been fooled by Microsoft's widely trumpeted "love" for Linux and Free and Open Source Software ()... I encourage you to watch this German-made investigative documentary and consider which view you think is more credible: youtube.com/watch?v=duaYLW7LQv

Oh hey, turns out it's even worse; it's more than just #WhatsApp, it's all FB-owned messaging: "Attorney General William P. Barr is set to press @facebook on Friday to create a so-called back door to its end-to-end encryption on WhatsApp ***AND OTHER MESSAGING PLATFORMS***"

To those who think that the tech megacorps are (or even can be) benevolent actors in the world... have a look at this: youtube.com/watch?v=duaYLW7LQv I think all the incentives are stacked against it.

Programming is a bit like poetry and songwriting... poets and songwriters can't not write poetry and songs... and programmers are similarly compelled to code. It can be a beautiful thing. But like poetry and songs, it can also be unappealing and self-indulgent :) - but at least can be re-imagined, remixed, repurposed, and redeemed...

I built a tool to search #IFC classes so that you categorise them properly.

If you know any architects, please share this with them: blenderbim.org/search.html

It will help promote #opensource and #free software and break the #autodesk monopoly.

Go #OpenBIM.

@lightweight what a provocative & insightful article. Some quotes:

The only form of consumption that’s clearly and positively correlated with good environmental intentions is diet.

in seeking to prevent climate breakdown, what counts is not what you do but what you stop doing

there should be an upper limit to the amount of income and wealth a person can amass. Just as we recognise a poverty line [...] we should recognise a riches line, above which no one should rise

Wow, this woman, Janette Wilson, being interviewed on RNZ who "doesn't heal people" but "witnesses people being healed by God", but who says she "does healing" for people who come along, but assures Lisa that she doesn't "do healing"... (it's "God that does it")... is dangerously deluded.

The NZ National Party's economic platform is akin to an non-pilot passenger taking over passenger plane's controls and aiming it (by sheer dumb luck) for the ground, and crowing about how they've made measurable improvements in flying speed.

Where are the #FOSS #FLOSS #OSS projects in the #Fediverse looking for contributions??

It's #Hacktoberfest and you should tag your issues with that label so we can find you and contribute to your projects :heart_cybre:

This is an open call to all current and aspiring NZ local and national politicians. Please reply to this post if you've read (all of) Kate Raworth's _Doughnut Economics_.

If you don't have that knowledge under your belt, I'm not going to vote for you, and I suspect many others will similarly judge you insufficiently well informed to lead or set any economic policy...

I'm deeply embarrassed for the NZ National party for continuing to bang on about prioritising "economic growth". Have they even been awake for the past 5 years? We need better politicians.

I have software to render project roadmaps visually. See subplot.liw.fi/roadmap/ for an example. The visual representation is no good for someone who can't see. i'd like to also generate a textual representation that is easily comprehensible to someone using, say, a screen reader.

If you use a screen reader or other assistive technologies for using a computer, and have time and energy, could you read paste.debian.net/1103453/ and give me feedback? I expect it to take 10-20 minutes.
