#OER game-changer for #highereducation in New Zealand launched today: oer.nz/coepnz This is how we achieve #sustainable education for all.

The new Centre for Open Education Practice is a great initiative for New Zealand learners and educators alike, and I'm delighted to be involved! oer.nz/coepnzlaunch It also serves to enrich our knowledge Commons, making it possible for *people to learn without needing to ask permission*! It's the next phase of sociocultural evolution.

"It’s now clear to me that 'not scaring the horses' is as irresponsible as standing in a burning building selling wet napkins instead of shouting fire." Truth: thespinoff.co.nz/science/01-07

So... do people who've built/bought a house think it's worth spending $3.5k to get a "HomeStar" rating on a new build? (we could probably get a 6 or 7 on our new build) Is it likely to be worth more than that if/when we sell it, maybe 20yrs down the track? For reference: nzgbc.org.nz/homestar

Huh - I hear Mailchimp has just changed the terms of its "free" tier to become rather less useful. (surprise!) Sadly, this is a property of *all proprietary web services*. If you want to avoid being caught in this situation again... consider avoiding proprietary web services! As luck would have it, Mautic, which is fully open source, is better anyway. Here's how & why we use it: tech.oeru.org/installing-mauti & here's a case study on its cost profile & how it works for us... tech.oeru.org/2018-update-oeru

Tactics against Free and Open Source Software developed by the proprietary software world that feels threatened. Very instructive. techrights.org/2019/06/30/how- I encourage us all to familiarise ourselves with them and reference them when we see examples in the wild.

Less than 2 months into $newjob and we have a genuine production issue caused by insufficient entropy! They sure hired the right person for this job! 🙂

Here's a thought... maybe our gov't should ditch the products & services of obstreperous US mega-tech-corps... rnz.co.nz/news/national/393504 That way, at least you're not contributing taxpayer funds to their depravity & instead are building up more ethical, local NZ businesses who can do better.

Ok... becoming rather impressed with MailCow... if you're looking to ditch mega-mail and roll your own, you should check it out! mailcow.email/ I'm running a couple dockerized instances.

RNZ’s framing of Amazon LOTR deal as “astronomically lucrative” for NZ is suss. Based on reported $1.5b budget, it’ll boost revenue lines for certain NZ film companies, but see govt fork out $375m+ in subsidies to Jeff Bezos, the richest man in the world. rnz.co.nz/news/national/393416

Once the adtech execs have control of the OS side as well as the APP side of the device APIs, once adtech demands dictate OS security features, Android will melt into the same kind of trashfire that Win32 was in the mid 1990s. (2/2)

The purpose of Google Fuchsia is obvious: the kick Linux out of Android. The more GOOG denies it, the more obvious it is. (1/2)

Headline says: "MICROSOFT'S EBOOK APOCALYPSE SHOWS THE DARK SIDE OF DRM"

The real truth is: THERE IS NO BRIGHT SIDE

Amusing that this 'patented' "unhackable" computer... is being promoted with Flash in the browser (I get a warning about "outdated" plugin technology on my Firefox browser)... not overly auspicious. kickstarter.com/projects/micro
