Still weirded out by this - made a big batch of dukkah over the weekend, toasted lots of spices, seeds, and nuts, and ground them in a mortar & pestle... and after the sweet tang of ground spices disappeared, there was a strong pong of something vaguely familiar... and eventually I figured out it was ... pipe tobacco?! What the? Anyone else every experienced this (a long shot, I know :) )?
And to clarify, no one in my household has ever smoked, and there's never been tobacco in nose-shot...
@lightweight aromatic pipe tobacco, popular amongst our Dad/Grandads generations was (and probably still is, if it hasn't been banned in these more health-conscious days)
treated with "casings" containing either these spices or chemicals derived from them..
