Last night around dusk I thought I saw a kāhu eating a sparrow on top of a tree in the backyard, but our other birds didn’t seem concerned. Upon closer inspection it turned out to be a pūkeko finding a nesting spot.
Never seen that before, although I have heard its screeches before in the evening.

I once surprised a pūkeko in my backyard and it took off and flew a lap around my house without hesitation, which astonished me considering it had walked in across the paddock.
